Big items, small space: smart storage for the things you love (but don’t use every day)
There are some things we just don’t want to part with – even if they take up more space than we actually have. The kayak you paddle a few times each summer. The winter and summer tyres that need swapping twice a year. The pram you might need again, just not right now.
Having space for everything isn’t always realistic, especially if you live in a flat or a smaller house. But renting a storage unit can make a huge difference. It gives you the freedom to keep what you care about, without cluttering your everyday life.
Here, we go through seven common types of items people store outside the home – and why it’s a smart choice, both practically and emotionally.
1. Winter tyres – heavy, dirty, and always in the way
Why people store them: Tyres are not exactly known for being easy to handle. They're heavy, dirty, and often in the way – especially if you're trying to fit them into a storage unit, hallway cupboard, or already cramped garage.
Benefit of storage: By placing your tyres in a storage unit, you get them out of the way while keeping them dry and clean until it's time for the next swap. A storage unit located on the ground floor is especially valuable; it makes it easy to roll the tyres in and out without having to lift them too far.
Extra tip: Label your tyres (front/back, left/right) before storing them – that way, you’ll avoid confusion when the next season comes around.
2. Roof boxes & Thule ski boxes – great on the car, bulky at home
Why people store them: Roof boxes are practical during winter, especially before a ski trip. But as soon as they’re off the car, they suddenly become a huge inconvenience. They’re too large for most homes, even if you have a garage. Storing a roof box outside shortens its lifespan and increases the risk of theft.
Benefit of storage: In a storage unit, you can easily hang the box on the wall or store it securely. When it’s time to mount it back on the car, simply pick it up – smooth and stress-free. If the storage unit is accessible by car, you can easily handle the mounting process right at the unit.
Extra tip: Store accessories such as brackets, straps, and keys in a labelled box next to the roof box, so you don’t have to search for them.
3. Kayaks, canoes & paddleboards – big dreams, big gear
Why people store them: Love life on the water? Then you know that the equipment takes up more space than you'd think. Even a simple paddleboard can be over three meters long, and a full-size kayak requires even more space.
Benefit of storage: By renting a storage unit near the water (or at home), you avoid cluttering your garage, patio, or garden. The equipment stays in good condition, ready for the next paddle trip. And you get to have actual living space in your home – not just storage space.
Extra tip: Create your own "outdoor section" in the storage unit where all your outdoor gear can be gathered. That way, it’s easy to pack the car for your next trip. Not everything in your storage unit has to be packed away; with a freestanding shelf in your unit, helmets, shoes, and life vests can be kept neatly visible.
4. Motorcycles & mopeds – seasonal vehicles that need safe rest
Why people store them: Anyone who rides a motorcycle or moped knows that it's not a vehicle you use year-round – especially in Sweden’s winter climate. But these vehicles need protection from the cold, moisture, and theft during the off-season.
Benefit of storage: A storage unit provides secure parking for motorcycles and mopeds. They are protected from the elements, and you don’t have to worry about them taking up space on the driveway, in the bike room, or in the yard.
Extra tip: Empty the fuel tank before storing the vehicle for the winter – and don’t forget the charger if it’s an electric model.
5. Camping gear – adventure in the summer, burden the rest of the year
Why people store them: Tents, stoves, folding chairs, cool boxes… Outdoor life and camping are fantastic, but the gear takes up a lot of space. And it’s often only used a few weekends per year.
Benefit of storage: Storing everything in a unit frees up space in the basement or wardrobe at home. You don’t have to see things you don’t use every day – and when it’s time for the next trip, you’ll know exactly where everything is.
Extra tip: Store everything in stackable plastic boxes. Label them with "Camping" + year, so it’s easy to update your equipment each season. This way, you can also easily find items you might choose to sell in order to update your own gear.
6. Baby gear – saved for the future or the next child
Why people store them: Stroller, crib, baby carrier, play gym… Children grow quickly, but their things continue to take up a lot of space long after they’ve stopped being used.
Benefit of storage: By packing away baby items in a storage unit, you no longer have to step over them every day. They’re kept safe for future siblings, relatives, or if you decide to sell them.
Extra tip: Place a list in each box with the contents and size or age, so it’s easy to grab the right items for next time. This also helps if you want to lend or sell some things.
7. Equipment for hobbies, events, and side projects
Why people store them: Photography gear, event tables, displays, decorations, or sports equipment; many hobbies come with a lot of stuff. And even if you don’t want to part with them, you don’t need them taking up space in your living room.
Benefit of storage: A storage unit makes it easy to switch between everyday life and hobbies. You can organise your gear, reduce stress, and free up space at home.
Extra tip: Create zones in the storage unit for different hobbies or seasons – it’ll make it easy to find what you need.
A little more space can bring a lot more joy!
Having big items isn’t the problem, it’s the lack of space that makes it difficult. By using a smart storage solution, you don’t have to compromise on your interests or your living space.
You (and your partner) can keep the things you love – without living among boxes, wheels, and kayaks.
